Many times over, I hear the term "Shadow work" used to refer to the side of ourselves we often wish not to speak of… or acknowledge. Whether it's our jealous side, angry side, vindictive or manipulative side- we cast those terms into the category, shadow.
It is true; light cannot live without the dark, so in essence, shadow is the perfect term to use in contrast to light. But, if this were true, why don't we say our light side in everyday lingo? I, in fact, never have stated my light side, ever. Does that mean shadow side or shadow self is a misrepresentation? Do we look for new terms to describe the parts of us we cannot explain, or rather, not wish to explain?
So far, the closest term to my actual language is yin and yang. Yet still, we are dividing the body or soul into two factions. But why must we be constantly separating the shadow from the light? Are we subconsciously making the bad worse by putting a term to specific emotions? Why can't we instead say we are doing emotion-based work instead of shadow work?
Would that be more empowering to the individual attempting to heal?
To be in the shadows of yourself vs. to be in the deep emotions of yourself. To me, one sounds accomplishable, attainable. The other- sounds like a lord of the Rings descent into darkness, where the dark elves govern your soul without a fair bargain.
